Message from the Continental President of WIMAAFRICA on the occasion of the Day of the Sea

Published on 30 Sep, 2022

Dear maritime sisters,

The seas cover more than 70% of the world’s surface and are a source of raw materials, energy and food. They are a living environment and a place of recreation, as well as the means of transporting more than 80% of the world’s trade volume.

On the occasion of World Maritime Day, what contribution can maritime women make to the sector’s ecological transition?
This year’s theme “New technologies for greener shipping” reflects the need to support an ecological transition of the maritime sector towards a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind, especially women. It allows us to emphasise the importance of a sustainable maritime sector and the need to build back better and greener in a post-pandemic world.

The 2022 theme will also allow a series of activities to delve into specific topics related to the promotion of inclusive innovation and the adoption of new technologies to support the needs of a greener transition of the maritime sector, particularly in the context of developing countries, and in particular small island developing states (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs). Africa and the Gulf of Guinea as an enclosed sea area further challenges women’s commitment to advocate and promote the vision of an ecological future for the region.
Also, this day is also linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDGs 13 and 14 on climate action and the sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources; SDG 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure; and SDG 17, which emphasises the importance of partnerships and implementation to achieve these goals.
Let’s all work for the implementation of new technologies……,

WIMAFRICA, UBUNTU!

Ms ADANLETE LAWSON Akuélé Yevona
Continental President WIMAFRICA
